.22 Ammo

In my little Colt Scout sixgun I usually try to use plated ammo. The other day I happened on some Remington Thunderbolt on sale so I got a carton. This saved me from ordering online and paying those silly ammo ship rates. Anyway, I have shot close to a carton or so of plated without cleaning or any problems and decided to shoot some of the Thunderbolts, which are unplated lead, to see how they worked. I put 100 rounds through the gun and started to get dirty chambers and was having to push the shells in the cylinder because of lead and powder buildup. I quit and cleaned my gun (sorry Al, I had to clean it). It now looks like it's old self so I put the thunderbolts away for use in the 10/22, which needs cleaning regularly anyway. I think I will stick with plated stuff in my Colt and my Browning pistol. Chris

PS: Congrats to book winners.

.22 Ammo

I just found some Remington sub-sonic ammo in my box so I'm going to try that as the bullets are unplated. I don't think there will be any difference from the high velocity as to the amount of residue left but I'll see. I still prefer plated .22 ammo as being cleaner but you don't see much standard or low velocity plated ammo. Chris

Plinking

I just did some rough calculating on what I've shot through my Colt Scout .22 sixgun and it looks like I have put around 2750 rounds through it since March of this year. That is roughly 300 rounds a month. I figure that's pretty good since I don't shoot every day; probably more like once a week if I'm lucky. That little .22 is sure fun though. Chris

More plinking

Actually I forgot to count a carton of Centurion ammo I tried out, but it had unplated bullets so I used it up and didn't buy anymore. My total is closer to 3200 now. Chris

Update on ammo

Shot 100 rounds of sub-sonic 22 through the Scout yesterday and it is slightly cleaner than the Thunderbolt but still dirty because it's un-plated. I may be biased but I also think the discount ammo, no matter what brand, is inferior to the more expensive premium loads. The Thunderbolt had many "soft" reports or weak recoil to put it in layman's terms. When I shoot the plated (usually premium) ammo it is very consistent in recoil and noise level for each shot. I am not advocating buying expensive ammo by any means but just suggesting that the stuff on sale, especially at big chain outlets may be a little less consistent than the premium ammo and plated is a lot cleaner no matter what brand. I'd be more inclined to blame

I'd be more inclined to blame the primer, powder, lube combo of the Remington ammo. Bet you'd get the same results with their plated ammo. BTDT.

OTOH I've shot hundreds of Winchester X-Pert .22LR (unplated) before cleaning, as well as their plated ammo.

HI BR: You may well be right as I haven't shot a lot of Winchester ammo. I didn't like the Centurion ammo though either and it is unplated. I used to shoot only CCI Minimag and Remington but now am definitly going to try Winchester and I just got some Federal plated hp ammo in a bulk box which I will try next. Thanks for the info. CHRIS
