Hi guys.  Not much action on the forums lately so I thought I'd spice things up with a pic of my new sixgun.  Its a S&W 629-6 5" Classic and I am loving it.  I had a 629PC model with the 2+ inch barrel and I gotta say that i didn't enjoy it all that much.  So I ended up trading for this beauty.  I am very impressed with the fit, function, trigger, and overall classic appearance of this gun.  It shoots my new load of 5.5gr Bullseye under a 240gr LSWC very well too.  Now I just need some leather for it.

Nice!

Lots of nice leather out there depending on what you like and want. Simply Rugged, Barranti, etc. etc. to name two. Good hunting for leather and good shooting. Chris S

Just about everyone, and that includes myself, just admires the S&W N frame. Whats not to like?

BTW, yours looks to be in exceptional condition.

New grips and leather

I got some new grips and a leather holster for this 629.
I have medium sized hands and cannot comfortably get to the trigger with grips that cover the backstrap.  The rubber grips that came with my 5" Classic did just that and had to go.  I read a lot about the Jerry Miculek signature grips from Hogue and thought they sounded like they would be worth a try.  I found a used set for sale over on smith-wessonforum.com.  I really like them.  Seems like they were made for my hand and trigger reach is perfect.  Only drawback is that they are kind of slick.  I may need to add some grip tape or try my hand at some checking or stippling on these grips.  I only shoot low to moderate power loads in this gun.  If I was going to shoot some real thumpers I may put the original rubber grips back on for a bit of cushion.

Don't have any pics yet with my new leather.  I got the Bianchi 5BHL holster for about $55 on Amazon.  Nice holster but not exactly what I was looking for.  Now that it is deer season around here I am really wanting a Diamond D Guides Choice chest holster.  Seems like the ideal holster for hunting carry.

I've been working on mine for 20 years, with some help from Gunny got it just about where I want it! They're shooters, that's for sure!

Second Cylinder

Al: Why a second cylinder? Is that a full moon clip?  Anyway, fine looking and glad Gunny took good care of it. Chris S

Stainless...

Didn't want to chuck the SS Cylinder into the lathe and hack away to fit the full moon clip (S&W Performance center clip), so I got a m29 cylinder and crane at the gunshow. Crane was bent but cylinder fit SS crane, after gunny worked on it he straightened out the M29 crane, and matched it to the frame and cylinder. Tolerances very tight, ended up taking another .001 off the front of the cylinder because, well, you know, I like to shoot my guns kinda dirty...Been beetin up on the bottom feeders at the weekly plate match

Hammer shim set
Trigger shim set
Fitted oversized pawl
Fitted oversized cylinder stop
Barrel removed, forcing cone re-cut to 11 deg.
Barrel crown recessed and re-cut to 89 deg.
Cylinder set to .060 headspace
Barrel set in and matched to cylinder .002 forcing cone gap, +- .0005
Cylinder base pin shortened to match new barrel position
Barrel pinned
Probably missing a couple of other things, Gunsmith can fill us in if he cares to.
Smoothed and times action, installed custom make cylinder shim kit, and set headspace to 60 thou. fit frame and cylinder fit so that the cylinder is 100 percent in contact with the frame at the center ring on the star, fit new Ahern grips. Sharpend checkering on hammer, backstrap, forestrap, thumb cylinder release. Lapped the barrel, opened the cylinder up to 431 diameter on both cylinders, Timed both cylinders and fit the cranes to the gun to match the frame, and timing. Double action pull is 10 pounds, and single action is 3 pounds.  Barrel fitted to exact center, with rear sight centered, and adjusting screw aligned with the other screws, at 25 yards. Then the barrel is pinned in place. All the screws are aligned so that if the screws come loose, you can see it instantly and tighten. Smiths all loosen with use.

No worries.  Now you are

No worries.  Now you are giving me ideas.  I have been pondering getting my cylinder cut for moon clips but I have never seen it done.  Thanks for sharing.

Sounds Good

That's what I kind of thought but didn't want to sound silly if I was wrong. I know, nobody would laugh at me??? Chris S

We might laugh...

...no guarantees!
Shoot IPSC and Speed Steel with it, also some pins, (almost forgot, 250 gr Keith's full blow at the 150 and 600 yard targets at the Elmer Keith Memorial Shoot as well).
Reloads almost as fast as a bottom feeder, only downside is the crunchy feeling when you stomp a clip into the ground while on the move!
Gunny did a nice job on the items mentioned above, I'd vouch for his work anytime. Cutting the cylinder should be done by a pro, My dad has done a couple now, the star is the tricky part.
Next one I do I think I'll plug the star in place and cut it with the cylinder.
