I finally found a REAL gun shop in Mississippi. Every place I have been within a hundred miles of my swamp, when I ask about reloading supplies, they either say "duh" or "Bubba don't stuff his own shells". However, out of desperation, I tried a place waayy out in the boonies and was rewarded. When I walked in, it was like being back in Montana. The guy actually had more powder than me; and a used gun rack as well as a full supply of new ones.
I immediately snatched up a supply of IMR powder in various denominations and asked them to check on the new Henry 45-70 lever rifle for me. All my 45-70's and 90's are Sharps, and those armadillos have been known to run in packs.
So, I'm almost happy again and can start using the Magnetospeed chronograph.
Guess I will get out the 7X61 Sharpe and Hart and annoy MAK with lots of data.

It's great

Doesn't Gaboom like the 7mm Rem Mag. And, it's easy to load for. It loves 4350. My M60 Schultz and Larsen has a 12" twist, though. So, I mostly stick to 140 Partitions. However, I made a serious mistake buying some Nosler 150 gr E-tips. They are almost as long as my Remington 175's. So, I will use them in the BAR 7mm Rem Mag and stick to the 140's and 150's in solid base or partition.
I killed a nice muley buck from the top of Square Butte in Montana with it. 535 yds. For real. And I was 600 or so feet above him. He was out from the base of the butte, and I was on top. My first shot went low, but I guess he couldn't tell what direction the shot came from because of the echos, so he just turned around a couple of times and stood still again. I held at the top of the antlers, and it went smack through his lungs. I could see blood spray from his nose the the Balvar 8 scope. He went down right now. I like the old B&L scopes and the Kuharsky bases. I can just pop the scope off and put on a different one without re-zeroing. The adjustments are in the base.

I Like Those Old B&L Scopes Too

Here's my 03 Springfield 35 Brown-Whelen with an 8 on it. I had to make a ring bottom part and star nut for it in my shop but I have since found some other pieces too. Chris S

Cool

Ain't the '03 a nice action? Interesting that you used one for 35 Whelen. I got the same bug after reading Elmer's book Safari. I bought an old '03, put a decent stock on it after fitting a 26" premium barrel and chambered it for 338-06. The old '06 case really comes to life in the larger bore sizes. My good buddy Tom Stevens of Great Falls, MT checkered it for me. I haven't yet drawn blood with it, but it shoots the Nosler 210 Partitions like lightning.
1903-338-06
Here is my Springfield in 338-06. I used the Conetrol mounts on it. I like them for their strength as well as the fact that they don't look like a collection of plumbing hardware like a lot of the mounts I see that people put on otherwise classy rifles.

Schultz-7X61S&H
This is my M60 Schultz & Larsen in 7X61 Sharpe and Hart. Great cartridge, and a slick and accurate rifle. Hard to find, but not that expensive...yet. Even has a Wundhammer swell on the grip. Eat your Hart out MAK. Used the Kujarsky mounts and rings on her. I have about six rifles with Kuharsky mounts and a bunch with Conetrols.

65X54MS
This little cutie is one of my special favorites. Griffin and Howe quick release mount and a nice old Weaver K2.5 with post and crosshair. In 6.5X54 Mannlicher Schoenauer, of course. Note the cocking piece peep sight. That tells me it was modified in the 1920's. Bought it in a gun shop in Deer Lodge, Montana and had a Douglas premium barrel with a 9" twist installed. Whoever originally modified it even built their own trigger for it that is pretty damn good. I borrowed the design for my Mannlicher 6.5X54 varminter.

Of course, none of these calibers are in the new Lyman manual. So, I got a copy of Load From A Disk, and I think I'll put the Lyman in the outhouse where it belongs.

Those 03's

I love the old 03 action. I gave my other 03 to my daughter. It is a sporter with a receiver sight and a real tack driver out to about 200-300 yards. I once rang some gongs at 600 with it but had to walk the shots in to get the sight on. My daughter shot her first and only deer with it so I thought it was fitting she owned it. Love your guns, I wish I lived in Montana now, don't you miss it? Chris S

Don't I?

You bet I miss it. Especially when the temp and humidity are both 100. There's nothing like the high country. It always cools off at night, the rainfall is less per year than one month here in the swamp, and everything doesn't have thorns or try to bite you.
I always told my physics students here: Life sucks below 4000 feet.
