Well, seems it's finally happened. I had heard some time ago that Hodgdon was going to discontinue it's 4227, and it is no longer listed in their line.
For those of us who enjoyed this powder, it had several virtues. First, load density was good, making it pretty near impossible to double charge a case. Second, power was very good, without the wrist snapping crack of some powders in its range, and third, it was really good for mid to upper velocity when you might wish for a capable load, but not a maxed out one.
I do see that Hodgdon, which now owns IMR, is offering an IMR 4227. This is an old rifle powder, if it's the original animal, that had a little less get up and go than the newer variety. I suppose it may be worth a look, but if it's too different, all those old load data entries have passed into history.
Has anyone here tried the new IMR powder in the .45 Colt? Let us all know right here if you have....

In The Past

Hi Mak
I used to load IMR4227 in my 357 and 44 magnum but only when I didn't have other numbers to use like 2400. I always thought it left a lot of granules in the bore and cylinder but it was accurate in the loads I used. Haven't used it for years now and don't have any on hand. Chris S

A little dirty

Thanks Chris,
Yep, the 4227 formula is indeed a bit dirty, but if you recall, so was Unique. I say was, because they revamped it a few, well more'n a few years ago now, and it's much cleaner burning.
If I could find a cleaner powder with the same profile I'd switch, but 2400 isn't it. What is really good about the now discontinued H4227 is its power and accuracy. The power level runs below H 110/WW296, which I appreciate more as I get older. Time allowing, I intend to load up some 270gr. and 300gr. rounds for woods bumming, and I don't want or need the recoil of full power Magnum charges.
Well, guess it's IMR 4227 or naught, so maybe after the holiday, I'll give  'em a call and see if this new IMR substitutes.
