Memories

I always believed the 44 WCF was best with stout black powder loads. If I saw what I thought I saw, there were a few of these being touched off. I had the brief pleasure, at one point of my life, of enjoying this cartridge in both Single Action Pistol and Lever Action Rifle. Good memories.

Mak, I load some hot loads in

Mak, I load some hot loads in my Marlin 1894CB, too hot for the Winchester 73' or a revolvers. I started out replicating Winchester's High Velocity loads for the Winchester 92' but eventually found a hard hitting 240gr load @ 265 yards. Muzzle velocity is 1,480 fps with a 240gr SWC. I prefer 200gr bullets but I have a ton of these. They group very well @ 100 yards and will certainly hold their own at 260 yards.

This was my second attempt and my next attempt I will adjust the scope for POA. I plan on doing that in the morning.

Talk in black

Suppose I didn't make absolutely clear what it was I was referring to, when I mentioned hot loads. Yes, smokeless can make some truly formidable 44WCF ammunition. However, I was referring to the propellant commonly dubbed black powder.
Lyman, and Ideal before them offered a 44 mold that had no real crimping groove, because that bullet was only intended to be seated over a case full of compressed black. This was pretty common, actually, to fill cases and compress the charge. Today, ball-less wonders swoon like delicate little girls over the mere thought of someone making ammunition with more power and accuracy than the factory fodder, but that's old hat.
I was observing that such loads placed the venerable 44 into the territory where it's reputation was made.
Now, it seems you are pursuing similar territory with smokeless. All I can say is best wishes and good shooting.

Hello again Mak,Yes, I

Hello again Mak,
Yes, I understood you were referring to "stout" Black Powder loads. With the world of Cowboy Action shooting's mouse farts and today's factory neutered loads that group like a shotgun blast.....you are correct.....original full black powder loads were certainly stout and more accurate in comparison.....but those ball-less  fail to understand that modern high pressure smokeless loads are in Lyman's 49th manual....just like high pressure 45-70 loads. Generation after generation of false information leads to ignorance.

Even John Taffin himself uses 10gr of Unique (Lyman lists 10.2gr) in custom 44-40 revolvers as well as his Colt New frontier (http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt4440.htm) which Lyman lists as 19,600 cup (SAAMI MAX is 13,000 cup) and my testings have found that load to produce 14,753psi (SAAMI MAX is 11,000 psi). Lyman lists nine rifles that these loads are safe to use and the Marlin 1894 is one of them.

Yeah boy, you better believe it...there are some folks that their brains explode when the words "44-40 high pressure loads" are muttered just like little scared short haired liberal's brains explode when they hear the words Donald Trump.

Interestingly enough, my testings of 40gr of Swiss FFG in unheadstamped semi-balloon head brass with a strain gauge produced 14,100 psi for a ten shot group avg...SAAMI max is 11,000psi
