Rifle scopes

I have come to the conclusion that we have been on the wrong track with rifle scopes. The round body on the scope only allows full adjustment in the mid elevation position, or windage position. Other than that, the erector lens system is cramped on one side or another of the scope tube. This is why the Unertl scopes were so good, as the outside adjustments allowed for full windage adjustments, reguardless of elevation. The internal lens systems can still be round, and the objective lens, and viewing lens can be round, for focusing, and ease of manufacture. The only square part would have to be around the ajustable erector lens.
Now you guys can see what I have been up to all this time. Working on long range rifles, and scratching my head on how to get the most preformance from them.
Every scope should have 60 moa adjustments on its upmost power setting. This would allow for the scope to be balanced to the capabilities of modern ammunition.

Right on

Nothing more frustrating then having to shim mounts,  set up/ bore  different height mounts, hrs spent trying to set up a scope so your adjustments are not way out in left field when adjusted to longer range targets.

Old B&L mounts?

Hey Gunny, find a set of old B&L adjustable mounts that allowed the adjustment of elevation and windage on the mounts. I have a set on my Springfield 35 Brown-Whelen with an old Balvar 2 1/2-8 scope....I am sure you could mount a regular scope in those rings and bases. Chris S

It had a fine adjustment, but

It had a fine adjustment, but not very precise. I have one on my Mod 70 Win. Correct for the year, and a very nice scope, BV 2-7. With tapered cross hairs. But not good for long range shooting, and windage adjustments. No the square scope tube would be the solution. I do not know why no one has done this before. With all the machining capabilities available now, it would be easy.

I called Leupold and talked

I called Leupold and talked to them about this idea. I think they thought I was crazy. We need someone to make one, and demonstrate the superority of the idea. Now I understand what old man Unertl was talking about years ago, concerning his scopes. He was so far past me at the time, all I could do was nod my head, like I had some idea what he was talking about. He talked about clairity, resolution, and adjustments. He felt his exterior adjustments were the superior system for long range, and target shooting, and that internal adjustments were fine for 1 time a year deer hunters. That is why he made the Falcon, Hawk, and Condor series of scopes. But the good ones like the Military uses were the external adjustable mounts.

Question?

Hi Gunny, was looking at old pictures and ran across your picture of Elmer's double rifles, neat. Anyway was noticing the pad on the one rifle was awfully nibbled at the toe. Was that from use or was the rubber just old and wearing off? Chris S
